From the moment Bradley utters the first syllable of the song’s central question, the sheer agony of what exactly that query means is written all over his face. Nevermind the sweat or the anguished expression—his emotions candidly register in that one rasping “why.” “Why is it so hard to make it in America,” he asks. There’s no easy answer, but Bradley’s version of protest soul strikes at the resounding pain of a dream deferred.
